MCS Chorus’ in-school ‘Gallery of Song’ program is an interactive presentation of Canadian music, poetry, and visual art for elementary students, developed by Artistic Director Mervin William Fick. Core to MCS Chorus’ community outreach commitment, the program is offered at no cost to schools in the Peel District School Board.
“Tangled Garden” – J. Wright (Gallery of Song)
The music of the in-school presentation is Gallery of Song: Spirit of the Land, a choral song cycle by Canadian composer, James Wright. The lyrics are based on poems written by Ontario students in response to a province wide competition to write their thoughts after viewing nine Group of Seven paintings.
During the presentation, each of the Group of Seven paintings is projected onto a screen, the accompanying poem is read, and the song is performed. To add layers to their learning, the students are encouraged to make meaningful connections between the painting, poem and music through question-and answer dialogue, and a variety of musical demonstrations.
The ‘Gallery of Song’ presentation allows students to experience a live performance and to see ‘first-hand’ a professional conductor and accompanist working with a highly skilled choir.
What do the teachers say?
“Your presentation of the ‘Gallery of Song’ gave our students a fully integrated experience of Art in its many forms. Mervin Fick was a brilliant communicator, in his ability to connect with our students and engage them with questions that really made them think about the whole artistic process. The suggestions for classroom teachers really helped prepare the students for the experience. However, they were blown away by the impact of the paintings coming to life through live performance. It was one of the most effective and inspiring performing arts presentations we have had.”
